Shared Care Scotland began as a small group of carers and professionals involved in respite care (now often called short breaks) meeting regularly to provide mutual support for each other. The group became formally constituted in 1989, then in October 1995 further evolved into a Charitable Company, Limited by Guarantee registered in Scotland.
Throughout Shared Care Scotland's early years its focus was limited to family-based care, however with the passage of time this has grown and broadened to include all models of short breaks (respite) care.
More recently in response to changing needs and expectations Shared Care Scotland has once again refocused its efforts resulting in an increasing amount of time and energy being spent on supporting the further development of 'alternative short breaks (respite)' throughout Scotland, often also referred to as natural breaks without boundaries or community based respite.
We very much regard this ongoing evolution over time as being indicative of an organisation which is both capable and willing to respond to unmet need. Until all needs are adequately met in terms of short break (respite) provision Shared Care Scotland will continue to have a function and purpose, which it will strive to fulfil.
